UDP port
By definition, UDP port cannot be monitored
The Port Sensor in Onagre allows users to monitor the availability of a specific TCP port on a target host. This sensor helps ensure that network services, such as web servers, databases, and application services, are accessible and responsive.
Configuration Options
When setting up a Port Sensor, the following parameters can be configured:
- Target Host: The IP address or hostname of the device to be monitored.
- Port Number: The specific TCP port to check.
- Timeout: Maximum time to wait for a response before considering the request as failed.
- Check Interval: Defines how often the port should be checked (e.g., every minute, every five minutes).
Response Validation
The Port Sensor validates responses based on:
- Port Reachability: Determines if the target host responds to the specified port.
- Latency Measurement: Tracks connection time trends over time.
Alerts and Notifications
If the sensor detects an issue with port availability, it can trigger alerts via:
- Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, Google Chat, Webhooks, Pushover
- Email Notifications
- Onagre’s Dashboard for Incident Tracking
Use Cases
- Ensuring that a web server (e.g., port 80/443) is accessible.
- Monitoring database availability (e.g., MySQL on port 3306, PostgreSQL on port 5432).
- Verifying application services on custom ports.
- Detecting firewall or network configuration changes affecting service availability.
Deployment
The Port Sensor can be used with both public and private resources. For internal network monitoring, Onagre’s private agent can be deployed to check ports within a secure environment.
Summary
The Port Sensor is a crucial tool for network and service monitoring, allowing real-time detection of connectivity issues and degraded performance. With flexible configuration and integration with alerting tools, it ensures proactive supervision of critical services.
